If you’ve read My Story on this blog, you’ll know my sweaty story started when I started going to university. I used to sweat simply walking to my various lecture halls and tutorial rooms. The anxiety my dripping appearance would give me would dampen my days. However, what I realised was a completely normalised accessory that almost every student had on campus was the trusty earphones.
I love listening to music and have a pretty eclectic playlist ranging from punk rock to electronic trap to rap to indie chill. As I went through my studying years, dealing with my sweat I realised that the type of music I listened to could actually have a psychological impact to my anxieties! It could actually reduce how much I was sweating!
If you are anything like me and are dealing with the double whammy of excessive sweat and nagging anxiety, know this. Just like physical exertion can sometimes trigger or amplify anxiety, leaving you feeling overwhelmed, music offers a powerful way to regulate your nervous system and find inner peace.
Why Music Helps with Sweat-Induced Anxiety:
- Reduces stress hormones like cortisol, counteracting the body’s “fight or flight” response often linked to sweat and anxiety.
- Lowers heart rate, promoting a sense of calm after intense physical activity that causes sweat.
- Provides a grounding presence, helping to distract from anxious thoughts related to feeling overly sweaty.
Music That Works for Calming Sweat and Anxiety:
Ambient/Downtempo: Creating a Sanctuary of Sound
This genre is characterized by its spacious, ethereal soundscapes, minimal percussion, and slow tempos. Think of it as sonic aromatherapy.
Why it works:
- Reduces Sensory Overload: When anxiety is high, the brain can be overwhelmed by sensory input. Ambient music strips away the excess, providing a calming backdrop.
- Promotes Relaxation: The lack of jarring rhythms and the use of sustained tones help to slow down the heart rate and induce a state of relaxation. This counteracts the physical effects of sweat and anxiety.
- Facilitates Mindfulness: The open, expansive nature of ambient music allows the listener to drift and focus on their breath, promoting a sense of presence.
- Example Artists: Brian Eno, Aphex Twin (Selected Ambient Works), Boards of Canada.
Classical (Baroque/Modern): Finding Order in Chaos
The structured harmonies and melodic beauty of classical music can provide a sense of stability and order. This can be particularly helpful during anxious moments.
Why it works:
- Harmonic Resonance: The consonant harmonies found in Baroque and certain modern classical pieces can have a direct calming effect on the nervous system.
- Predictable Patterns: The structured nature of classical music provides a sense of predictability, which can be reassuring when anxiety is making you feel out of control.
- Emotional Release: The emotional depth of classical music can provide a safe outlet for expressing and processing difficult emotions associated with anxiety.
- Example Composers: J.S. Bach, Claude Debussy, Max Richter.
Nature Sounds/White Noise: Grounding in the Present Moment
These sounds can mask intrusive thoughts and create a sense of immersion in a calming environment.
Why it works:
- Sensory Distraction: The consistent, predictable nature of nature sounds and white noise can help to distract from anxious thoughts and physical sensations.
- Creating a Safe Space: These sounds can create a sense of a safe, natural environment, which can be especially helpful when feeling overwhelmed.
- Promoting Sleep: If anxiety is interfering with sleep, nature sounds and white noise can help to create a conducive environment for rest.
- Example Sounds: Rain sounds, ocean waves, forest ambience, white noise, pink noise.
Chill Electronic/Deep House: Rhythmic Calm
These genres offer a balance of rhythmic energy and melodic warmth, providing a gentle lift without being overwhelming.
Why it works:
- Regulated Heart Rate: The steady, rhythmic beats can help to regulate the heart rate, promoting a sense of calm.
- Mood Elevation: The warm, melodic elements can help to elevate mood and reduce feelings of anxiety.
- Mindful Movement: The gentle rhythms can also be conducive to mindful movement, such as slow stretching or yoga, which can further help to release tension.
- Example Artists: Bonobo, Tycho, Lane 8.
Instrumental Post-Rock: Emotional Release and Catharsis
This genre is known for its soaring melodies, dynamic shifts, and emotional intensity, all without lyrics.
Why it works:
- Emotional Processing: The dynamic shifts in post-rock can help to mirror and process the ups and downs of anxiety.
- Cathartic Release: The soaring melodies and powerful crescendos can provide a sense of emotional release, helping to alleviate pent-up tension.
- Focus on Sound: The lack of lyrics allows the listener to focus on the pure sound of the music, promoting a sense of mindfulness.
- Example Bands: Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Tips for Maximizing Calming Effects:
- Keep volume low to create a gentle soundscape.
- Practice deep, slow breathing in sync with the music’s rhythm.
- Practice mindfulness, focusing on the present moment and letting the music wash over you.
Music is a valuable tool for managing anxiety, especially when it’s linked to physical exertion and excessive sweat. For years, I’ve been curating my playlists wisely to find music that supports my inner calm.
And my fellow sweaters and music lovers, watch this space… As I will definitely be adding to this and posting a few of my favourite artists and bands I listen to when I find myself in a bit of a sweat caused by worry or anxiety.
